Open Orchards

Scottish Orchards is a network of enthusiasts looking to help preserve varieties of Scottish apples, plums and pears, and develop skills in pruning, grafting needed to preserve fruit trees for the future. We can supply finest fruit trees - and also offer training and advice to groups and individuals looking to develop orchards in Scotland

Go visit an orchard near you ... Orchards are lovely places to visit in times of harvest, and also throughout the year when the trees are in blossom and the fruit is forming.

The idea behind Open Orchards is to encourage people to Open their Orchards for a day or  perhaps more - and to let the public know where they can go to enjoy taking part in orchard activities.

In the summer of 2013 John Hancox - chair of Scottish Orchards (see also John Hancox’ Scottish Fruit trees) submitted an application to the Community Food Fund, which is Scottish Government funding - and administered by SAC consulting. The application was submitted within 5 minutes of deadline back in June 2013.

The idea of the grant application is to celebrate the Scottish Harvest - and to get people out into our Scottish Orchards at Harvest time. There was also a strong emphasis on ensuring the harvest is used by cooks and chefs.

Due to delays with Scottish Government we didn’t actually get funding through until 26th Sept - though we had verbal confirmation before - so then it was a mad dash to try to deliver the project as well as we could while the fruit was still there to be used! This made the project delivery a it hectic!

First of all we made a start by harvesting some Scottish apples - and then we mashed, juiced, cooked, ate and enjoyed them

Enjoy -
